Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in Northern Ireland are a new model for primary care where various health and social care professionals work in GP practices to offer enhanced access to services.

The teams include professionals like:

• physiotherapists
• social workers
• mental health practitioners

They work alongside GPs to provide first contact and early intervention for a patient’s physical, mental, and social wellbeing. The initiative is part of the Health and Social Care Northern Ireland’s transformation programme, aiming to reduce the need for hospital referrals and support local communities.
